Working with freelancers - virtual training

Next month I’ll be delivering an online workshop about commissioning and working with freelancers for museums in the West Midlands on behalf of West Midlands Museum Development.

It’s really encouraging to see more organisations and museums show an interest in - and take increased responsibility for - developing good practice when it comes to commissioning and working with freelancers, especially in light of the findings from our Museum Freelance surveys last year, which really highlighted the need for this.

The session will cover:

  • Overview of Museum Freelance 2020 survey: who are freelancers in the sector, their main motivations, challenges and so on

  • Legalities, rights and responsibilities for both freelancers and clients

  • Commissioning freelancers in an inclusive, fair and transparent way – what does this look like

  • A good freelance brief

  • Contracts, work plans and effective working relationships

  • What to do when things don’t go to plan – and how to prevent this

  • Budgets, pricing and day rates

  • Where to find freelancers.
