Freelance training for Kick the Dust-ers

I’ve just delivered the last of three online workshops for young people on Norfolk Museums Service’s Kick the Dust scheme who are interested in freelancing in the sector. They were a brilliant and receptive group of creative and interested people, and it was so inspiring to get a chance to work with them.

Kick the Dust provides young people aged 11-25 with opportunities to get involved with museums and heritage, from finding work experience to taking part in creative workshops.

The sessions covered:

  1. An introduction to freelancing - an overview of what freelancing is and how it differed to employment, realistic insights into freelancing, options available, steps to consider when starting out, why clients commission freelancers, is freelancing for you?

  2. Running a viable business - understanding the basics of tax, insurance and freelance finances, freelancers’ rights, a simple business plan, free tools to help freelance businesses flourish

  3. Finding work and marketing yourself - how and where to find work in the sector, a guide to day rates and knowing what to charge, working out your USP, practical ideas and inspiration for marketing yourself.
